The end of the Summer and the Jerry Lewis Telethon.

Believe it or not the summer is almost over.  Like most of us if we have kids, we gauge our summers by the time our kids are home while school is out.  So, as of today, schools start in less than 30 days.  Like I said, summer is almost over.  It still seems weird to me though, because I am a child of the 70's and 80's and for me the end of the summer was always The Jerry Lewis Labor Day Marathon.

I use to look forward to the telethon with a mixture of anticipation and dread.  I would tell myself that I was going to stay up all night and watch it from beginning to end.  I challenged myself to do it, (I never made it).

I also feared the telethon, because I knew that I was going back to school come Tuesday.  Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed school.  I was a good student and I liked to learn, (still do), but I was afraid.  Afraid of the unknown. I believe this is where my "Sunday night anxiety", started.

Looking back, I don't have a "favorite" memory of my summer vacations.  I remember trips with my family.  Spending days at the lake.  Going to ballgames.  Having bottle rocket fights with my brother, and staying up as late as I wanted.  Maybe I do have a favorite memory after all.  The bottle rocket fight was pretty fun.  Just ask my brother.

I think my favorite summer memory as an adult is the vacation my family and I took to Mexico.  My kids were younger and got to experience things that were very much new and different.  I remember it was so hot there, that I was going to shave my head. Luckily my wife talked me out of it.  Trust me, nobody wants to see me with a shaved head.

As I got older, I stopped watching the telethon, but in my head, Labor Day was still the end of summer.  Whether it is a cook out, a pool day, or an extra day to sleep late.  Labor day is and always will be the end of summer for me.

So my friends, I ask you.  What does the end of summer mean to you?  Also, what is your favorite summer memory?
